January 27 - February 3, 2021 (there is lots under this one, but the main tings are returning the disclosure form, paying the class fee, journal entries, the Creative Name assignment, Experimenting with Drawing Tools assignment, and the 8 Drawings of an Object in a Mini-Book assignment):
***If you do not have your bag of drawing supplies for the next activities, email Ms. Shuler and/or Ms. Cannon immediately so we can get your supplies to you.***
1. Print off disclosure form, sign it, and email it or bring it to Ms. Shuler. Pay class fee and email receipt or print off receipt at the financial office at school and bring it to Ms. Shuler. Email Ms. Shuler about the Disclosure Quiz.
2. Write journal entries #2-4 in your journal (all journal entries are under Journal Entries in the Drawing tab and information about journal entry assignments is under the Assignments tab).
3. Complete the Creative Name Assignment: pull up the "Creative Name Assignment" powerpoint and follow instructions to do the Creative Name assignment. If you can't pull up the powerpoint, look at the Assignments tab for a description of this assignment. Creative Name assignments will be due on Feb. 8-9.
4. Look through the "Purposes of Drawing" powerpoint and notice the different purposes and ways of drawing.
5. Complete the Experimenting with Drawing Tools Assignment: fold the same piece of paper in half 3 times so you have 8 folded sections. Use the other side of the paper you haven't written on yet. Put your name on your paper. Then pull up the "Drawing Tools" powerpoint. Follow the instructions on the powerpoint to practice with each drawing tool on your paper (Experimenting with Drawing Tools assignment). Experimenting with Drawing Tools assignment will be due on Feb. 8-9.
6. Complete the 8 Drawings of an Object in a mini-book assignment: Get a new piece of paper. Pull up the "8 Drawings of an Object" Powerpoint. Watch the video ("Single Sheet 8-Page Mini-Book" video- all videos are under Youtube Clips in the Drawing tab and there is a link in the "8 Drawings of an Object" powerpoint as well) to make your mini-book, and follow instructions complete 8 drawings in the mini-book (one drawing per page including the front and back covers). The 8 Drawings of an Object in a Mini-Book assignment should take between about an hour and a half to finish. They will be due on Feb. 10-11.
7. When you are finished with any assignments, take a picture of them and email it to Ms. Shuler.
February 4-5, 2021

2. Open the "Sketchbooks and Brain Monsters" powerpoint, watch the"The Man in the Arena" video under the Youtube Clips tab.
3. Follow the instructions in the powerpoint to complete the Brain Monster assignment (look under the Assignments tab for a description). Brain Monsters will be due Feb. 10 & 11.
4. Work on your 8 Drawings of an Object in a Mini-Book assignment. Send pictures of your completed Creative Name assignment and your Experimenting with Drawing Tools assignment from the "Drawing Tools" powerpoint to Ms. Shuler's email (find on the disclosure document).
February 8-9, 2021
1. Complete Journal Entry #6.
2. Open the "Seeing Like an Artist" PowerPoint.
3. Follow the instructions in the powerpoint to complete the first sketchbook assignment for Sketchbook Check #1: Drawing 3 Hands Using the Look, Hold, Draw Method (look under the Assignments tab for a description).
4. Work on 8 Drawings of an Object in a Mini-Book and Brain Monsters assignments to turn in on February 10th/11th.
February 10-11, 2021
1. Complete Journal Entry #7.
2. Open "Blind Contour Drawing" powerpoint. Review Look, Hold, Draw Method. Watch the "Blind-Contour Line Drawing" video under Youtube Clips tab.
3. Follow the instructions in the powerpoint to complete the second sketchbook assignment for Sketchbook check #1: Three Blind Contour Drawings (1 face, 1 animal, and 1 shoe) and One Creative Blind Contour Drawing.
4. Send pictures of your completed 8 Drawings of an Object in a Mini-Book and Brain Monster assignments to Ms. Shuler's email (find on the disclosure document).
February 12&16, 2021
1. Complete Journal Entry #8.
2. Open "Gesture Drawing" powerpoint. Review blind-contour drawing and the Look, Hold, Draw method by doing the two warm-up exercises.
3. Read through the slides about gesture drawing and look at the examples of human figure and animal figure gesture drawings. Watch the "How to Create Gesture Drawing" video under the Youtube Clips tab to learn how to draw a human figure gesture drawing. Practice making 2-3 min gesture drawings using pictures from the powerpoint or the Gesture References tab.
4. Follow instructions in the powerpoint to complete the third sketchbook assignment for Sketchbook Check #1: 5 gesture drawings of related movement poses (individual human figures doing a series of related poses that show movement from your favorite sport or hobby- ex. different dive positions, hip hop dance moves, basketball moves, etc.).

February 17 & 18, 2021
1. Complete Journal Entry #9
2. Open "Gesture Drawing 2" powerpoint. Do the warm up to learn how to measure and match angles with your pencil. Look through the powerpoint to review gesture drawing. Watch the "Gesture Drawing Practice 20 and 40 sec. Poses" video (find it under Youtube Clips tab).
3. Practice quick gesture drawings by timing yourself doing 20, 30, and 40 second gesture drawings using images on the powerpoint or images under the Gesture References tab. If you are at home, practice doing gesture drawings from a live model if possible- have a family member pose for you for 2-3 minutes (some sort of pose that isn't just standing straight...could be an active pose, sitting down with crossed legs, or some other active pose). You can also do a gesture drawing of a pet to get some practice in as well.
4. Finish the third sketchbook assignment for Sketchbook Check #1: 5 gesture drawings of related movement poses (see above at Feb. 12 & 16 or the Assignments tab). Work on the other two Sketchbook Check #1 assignments as well (see the Assignments tab). Sketchbook Check #1 will be on Feb. 23 & 24.
5. Print off a black & white picture of an animal (can be a pet or another animal) and bring it class: Turn the picture black and white before you print it off and bring it. Make sure the animal is not too small in the photo-the animal should take up the majority of the photo. Bring the reference picture to class next class period (due Feb 19 & 22) so you will be ready to start the next project. If you are quarantined, make sure you have it at home and watch the website for further instructions. Print the photo off as large as you can on a piece of 8 x 11.5" white printer/copy paper.
February 19 & 22, 2021
1. Do Journal Entry # 10.
2. Open "Gesture Drawing Story Project" powerpoint and review the Gesture Story Project guidelines and steps to completion.
3. Practice gesture drawing in your sketchbook. Work on the Sketchbook Check #1 assignments (see the Assignments tab for descriptions) so you'll be ready for the sketchbook check on Feb. 23 & 24. Start on the Gesture Story Project (if you can't open the "Gesture Story Project" powerpoint, see the Assignments tab for a description. This project will be due on March 3 & 4. There is a task sheet under the Task Sheets tab that has the instructions as well and criteria I will be grading on.
February 23 & 24, 2021
1. Do Journal entry #11.
2. Sketchbook Check #1 is due. If you are stuck at home, email Ms. Shuler photos of your assignments due for this sketchbook check. If you don't know what assignments are due for this sketchbook check, check under the Assignments Tab and scroll down to Sketchbook Check #1 and look at the assignment descriptions.
3. Work on your Gesture Drawing Story Project. Write out your story in your sketchbook and find 3 poses that tell that story. Think of the big moments of the story, or ways your poses can show the emotions or underlying themes going on with your story. Make sure your picture references are photos of realistic people, not drawings or animated cartoons of people.
February 25 & 26
1. Do Journal entry #12. Make note: The Sketchbook Check #2 will include 5 sketchbook prompts AND 1 hour of drawing on your own outside of class in your sketchbook (sketchbook prompt #1 is in the journal entry or can be found under Sketchbook Prompts tab). start working on the sketchbook prompts and your 1 hour of drawing outside of class now, don't procrastinate!
2. Check out the "Gesture drawing story project review and 4 ways to improve gesture drawings" powerpoint and do a bigger timed gesture drawing of the lion and the dancer in your sketchbook or on a different piece of paper. Go through the powerpoint and review the tips for refining gesture drawings, and practice the tips on your lion and dancer.
3. Review the steps for the Gesture Drawing Story Project and look at the task sheet under the Task Sheets tab. Look at the criteria I will be grading on.
4. Print off and bring to class your black and white reference photo of an animal. It can be any animal, real or mythical, just make sure it's large in the photo, not small or in the distance. We will be using our reference photos for the next project, which we will start on March 1 & 2 or March 3& 4. I will be giving points for bringing your reference photo.
5. Work on your Gesture Drawing Story Project. Send Ms. Shuler pictures from your sketchbook for the Sketchbook Check #1 if you're stuck at home (only need to send pictures of the three hands, 4 blind-contour drawings of a face, animal, shoe or object, and the bigger creative blind-contour of your choice).
March 1 & 2
1. Do Journal Entry #13
2. Finish your Gesture Drawing Story Project (due March 3 & 4 with pink task sheet-fill out the self-score down in the rubric section). If you don't have a big paper to do your final drawing on, check off your rough draft and get one from Ms. Cannon or Ms. Shuler. If you know you won't have your project ready to turn in on the due date, get a Late Work Contract, fill it out, and turn it in with your project when you get the project done.
3. Print off and bring a black and white picture of an animal so you can start on the Animal Grid Project next class period!
March 3-5 (substitute teacher while Ms. Shuler and Ms. Cannon are gone)

2. (both classes) Look at the Animal Grid Project Intro Powerpoint. Watch the "How to Grid a Realistic Portrait Drawing!" video under YouTube Clips tab. Start the first steps of the Animal Grid Project as outlined in the Animal Grid Project Intro Powerpoint presentation (measuring/drawing your 1"x1" grid on your reference photo and the grid on a grey piece of paper-get your grey paper from Ms. Shuler or Ms. Cannon, or email them if you can't come to class for a while).
March 10 & 11
1. Do Journal Entry #16
2. Work on the first few steps of the Animal Grid Project: measuring/drawing your 1"x1" grid on your reference photo and the grid on a grey piece of paper (get the grey paper from Ms. Shuler or Ms. Cannon or email them if you can't come to class for a while), and start your line drawing. Check the Animal Grid Project Intro Powerpoint presentation for instructions.
